Yorkshire-Built Quality Audio
YORKSHIRE BUILT QUALITY AUDIO
The County of Yorkshire in England has a long history of great audio manufacturers: notable audio companies past and present include A.R. Sugden (Connoisseur Turntables), J.E. Sugden (Amplifiers), Calrec Audio (Mixing Desks), Audionics (Broadcast Audio), Sage Audio (Amplifier Modules) and Wharfedale (Loudspeakers and Consumer Audio).
Perhaps it's because Yorkshire is such a musically rich and musically diverse county? Brass Bands, Male Voice Choirs, Choral Societies, Folk Music, Rock and Pop: world famous 80's band Human League for example.
In 1989 Graham Slee Projects added its name to the Yorkshire tradition of quality audio: manufacturing every piece of its own audio gear in its Yorkshire premises.
My own 37 year career background (time of writing 2009) has been in Yorkshire's engineering industries, starting in heavy engineering, moving into AV, then PCB design and manufacture, sub-contract electronics manufacturing, broadcast-audio equipment design, freelance audio R&D and then Graham Slee Projects. I started designing my own audio equipment, and in particular, phono preamps, in 1976 as a hobby for disco use.
Yorkshire, England's largest county, having been stripped of its industrial heart by successive UK governments still retains its ideals of down to earth quality, value for money, and to always shine above the rest.
Audio Equipment Designed Built and Tested in Yorkshire
Most British, European and American audio equipment you come across these days is of the "designed here - built over there variety". Not so with the company I founded some 10 years ago. Admittedly it would be more profitable and I would probably have paid my mortgage by now, but then again I don't think we'd have been able to offer our customers the consistent high standards and staggering audio performance we do given that scenario.
Quality control is everything and it's something you cannot do by remote control.
We achieve our quality control because we are a small crew of three time-served audio engineers making everything we sell (except third-party plug-top power supplies) by hand - testing it in the time honoured tradition: measuring every piece for the all important tell-tale signs revealed through bandwidth, gain, noise and distortion measurements.
By hand made we mean exactly that: every board is hand soldered by experienced hands - nothing is left to chance.
Component selection is another thing you cannot sub-out and expect everything to run smooth - as I recently found when the company who supply our resistors decided to out-source: "Those resistors are not right!" I protested, on discovering a batch that didn't look like it belonged. Listening tests confirmed a complete lack of decay on piano notes and a full investigation was launched by yours truly the following day. The result was not a single piece left our workshops until we had the right resistors, ensuring our customers satisfaction. Would we have noticed by remote control?
Hit or Myth?
While on the subject of component selection, some people are quite amazed how we turn a great performance out of seemingly ordinary components? What! No Black Gates? No 0.01% resistors? No tank sized rupture inducing armour plated enclosures packed with "specialist" audiovile components? Let me explain...
For some reason the western world gets off on "Babylonian Mythology" instead of the truth. There are, and always have been in my lifetime, components of excellence with no hype surrounding them. When placed in a well designed circuit (of the kind we design) they outperform every single one of the so-called "designer components", but what's more is they don't cost silly prices, which means we can and do bring you incredible audio performance at a price you can afford this lifetime!
As thousands of satisfied customers tell us "you should be shouting about your products from the rooftops!" I guess the above will have to do.
Best wishes,
Graham Slee
